Nabeel – Recruiting Manager for Tech & Product at finleap
I am Nabeel, Recruitment Manager at finleap. I started in September 2019 and I am currently supporting finleap and its portfolio companies in their growth plans by getting the best people onboard.
I have a background in recruitment. Since completing my post-graduation studies in 2008, I have helped multiple companies across India, the Americas and Europe to attract talent and grow their teams.
What does diversity in the workplace mean to you?
For me diversity at the workplace means accepting the way someone is, despite their backgrounds of language, country, gender or style of communication, and coexist together in a healthy environment by working and growing together with a common goal.
I have spent a lot of time in India, where we are still debating and improving ourselves every day to be more diverse and inclusive at the workplace. Being in Europe for the past 4 years, has made me more aware of the need for diversity, due to my role as a recruiter. I talk to people across the globe – Latin America, Africa (especially Nigeria), Asia and Europe, and I always enjoy the discussions and making sure to evaluate candidates by their skills and not external factors.
What do companies have to change or start doing to become more diverse?
At the very start, a company must understand and explore what diversity means for their existence. How important is it? Is this something that needs to be addressed because everyone else is talking about it?
The more we discuss this topic, the more we tend to realize the importance of a diverse workforce and the beauty of coexisting, despite who we are, where we come from or what our beliefs are.
Why do you think diversity in teams & companies is important?
Working in teams within companies operating in culturally rich places like Berlin, one of the melting pots of people from different countries, lifestyles and ideas, it becomes crucial to understand that in order to build a sustainable company, you need to have a sustainable workforce whose diversity will be addressed as much as possible. Addressing diversity starts from understanding and learning more about the differences that make the people and their values and then making it a part of the company’s value so that people believe in the value which will eventually shape the culture of the company.
Today, everyone researches and learns about a company from different aspects. People are looking for a team or company that believes in acceptance, respect, accommodative mentality and gender equality. No matter how great of a business model and financially successful a company is, if you do not accept diversity – it might be a recipe for failure.
