Interview Series: What Diversity means to us – Part Two

Last week for International Diversity Day, we kicked off the first of our three-part interview series to celebrate diversity.

Why is diversity so important to us? Well it is in our DNA. One of our core values that defines how we interact with each other is diversity. It shows in the way we hire, look at problems and opportunities.

Over the course of the next weeks, we will be posting several series of interviews we held with our fins (that’s what we call finleap’s ecosystem team members) about what diversity means to them, what it looks like at finleap and in our ecosystem, and their advice for companies looking to strengthen diversity in their teams.

This series of interviews was conducted with Ciro Chen, Designer at finleap, Ruth Smith, Junior Operations Manager at finleap connect, and Marina Fernandes, Senior Product Owner at solarisBank

Read on to find out more about diversity at finleap at what it means to our team.

Ciro Chen – Designer at finleap

My name is Ciro Chen, and I’m a product designer in the finleap build team.

My main ambition is building easy-to-use, user-centered and eye-appealing digital products. In the past two years, I’ve been working for different ventures in the finleap ecosystem, with international cross-functional teams, like Perseus and Joonko.

What does diversity in the workplace mean to you?

It means I have the opportunity to listen to different voices from different genders, backgrounds and cultures. It means that I feel safe and free to present my ideas and be creative, without worrying about what my teammates will think about me – because every voice, every idea is welcomed.

Ruth Smith – Junior Operations Manager at finleap connect

Hi, I’m Ruth. I am originally from the West Midlands of the UK. Going into my hometown hearing Asian artists singing in Punjabi with snippets of Jamaican Patois to a reggae beat, I really can say I come from a cultural melting pot. I currently work as Junior Operations Manager for finleap Connect. My main responsibilities are supporting projects and overseeing central functions, however, my role really has no limitations – so don’t be surprised if you see me doing something out of the ordinary.

What does diversity in the workplace mean to you?

For me, diversity in the workplace means inclusivity and representation. Having people from different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives working together in one place is what creates a diverse environment. Wouldn’t it be boring if we were all the same?

Marina Fernandes – Senior Product Owner at solarisBank

My name is Marina and I am originally from Brazil.  After finishing my bachelor studies in Electrical Engineering, I joined the Product Department at Itau, the biggest private bank in Latin America. After 3 great years there, I decided to get to know the world of fintech better and discover why and how they delivered such good products so fast. I am now working as a Senior Product Owner in the Digital Banking Unit at solarisBank.

What does diversity in the workplace mean to you?

Diversity means that different aspects of a society are able to be represented in a company. It means that a workplace has the ability to equally include a high variety of religions, sexual orientations, nationalities and genders.
